Greetings from Gayton-le-Marsh, Lincolnshire, England, Earth, where gale-force winds lash us on the farm… whistling through the house through hidden cracks, blowing through the chimney… Even normal wind would be unusual for us, after having spent the past year sheltered by the Andes mountains in Bogotá, Colombia…
When you sit listening to the wind, you are reminded of Nature, the earth, or the Earth, or the wild, or The Wild… What shall we call it? This bit of us that sits outside of our human body…
Our current economic system, a form of capitalism, doesn’t want us to be reminded of The Wild… That we are nested within Nature, and not living in a Venn Diagram, (where Economy, Ecology and Social meet in some sort of non-existent middle)…
If we are reminded of The Wild, we might stop what we are doing (what the majority of us are doing), and the economic system would collapse. We’d reconnect to awe… And awe is right here, right out there… And charges nothing… Creates no jobs…
What else around us is anti-capitalist? Have fun looking at your day… Where are you connected to The Wild, and where do you rely on the system?
My second cousin and I had this conversation a few months back… She said that just by breathing she was within the system since, if she didn’t have air conditioning, she would die (due to a chronic illness)… And her son said that, just by being alive, the two of them are within the system due to life-saving medications they need each day…
Look at your day, your night… Where are you anti-capitalist? Where are you connected to The Wild?
The wind, the gale-force winds, require extra effort to GO somewhere, require the space around us to be well rooted…
Many people live in a place with no reminders of The Wild… landscaped, air conditioned, car-driven, enclosed… But they might do the odd anti-capitalist thing… A conversation with a neighbor… Cooking for someone… Smiling…
What if there were an app for our smart phones that reminded us of The Wild and encouraged anti-capitalist behaviors…
It’s windy here. Is it windy there?
